Magny Cours, France May 30th - June 1st 2008
Geoff, who has a successful Belfast based optical practice, and Hal, a stockbroker, have been racing historic cars on the European competitive circuit for almost two years, and after several podium placings, they have now taken 1st place in the gruelling 12 hour long Magny Cours race in France. The duo teamed up with well respected UK racing driver Stephen Hitchens for the event.
Sharing the start line with over thirty head-turning 1960s and 1970s historic Le Mans cars, McConville and Catherwood's Esprit Compétition Chevron (a 1971 Le Mans veteran) quickly outpaced the competition and finished the arduous circuit first despite losing the vehicle's clutch, headlight and wipers en route.
The County Down drivers have established a respected reputation on the Historic Race circuit in Europe, noted for their speed, verve and tenacity. With three races down and another four in the series to go, they have their sights firmly on winning the overall Championship.
"The Magny Cours race is the high point of the historic endurance racing year with its exceptional 12 hours of endurance." Geoff explains. " The spectators love it - the cars look spectacular and the drivers push their cars to the limits. This podium first place has been the high point of our year, but we are already working towards a win at the next stage in the series - a 6 hour race at Dijon on July 4th weekend."
ˇ Geoff and Hal will compete in the next leg of the European Historic Endurance Racing Series on 4th, 5th and 6th of July at Dijon, Further information on the race can be found at www.vdev.fr
