Stocking Fillers : Eyewear Trends 08/09
Style News

What every eyewear aficionado will want under the tree this Christmas? Geoff McConville wraps it up. When it comes to eyewear, Hollywood's A list can start a trend in the blink of an eyelash. And right now, that means oversized Prada as worn by Christina Aguilera, Nicola Ritchie, Juliette Lewis, or Tom Ford as worn by Daniel Craig in his latest 007 incarnation, Quantum of Solace. So if you are considering specs as stocking fillers this Christmas, then check out these hot trends for eyewear aficionados.

For Her:

CAREER SOPHISTICATES: upward mobility on the career ladder? Opt for statement specs that are also serious enough to look the business. Timberland, Tom Davies bespoke, Lafont and Prada have heavy duty frames that mean business.

OUT THERE: if you work in a creative industry, then no better excuse to break the rules with your choice of eyewear. Think bold, chunky shapes and extrovert pattern or colour – like Roberto Cavalli's sixties pattern or Alain Mikli's futuristic frames.

BLACK TIE: Day specs not making the transition to night? Then invest in special occasion specs with black tie drama – the kind that look great with a long or little black dress - diamante, crystal, mosaic pattern. The best this year? Svarovski by Silhouette have the best quality crystals on frames worthy of a silver screen goddess.

For Him:

NOSTALGIA: Think TV's Mad Men meet Clark Kent – ubercool specs on the cusp of geek-dom, solid heavy frames with a funky modern twist. High Tech Blokes will always go for hi tech specs – the Kimi Raikkonen range for Tag Heuer, Oakley's performance sports range, or Alain Mikli's statement specs.

FEATHERWEIGHT CONTENDERS: Barely there frames that weigh next to nothing are favoured by the intelligentsia – and by long term eyeglass wearers. If you are aiming to impress, titanium frames and rimless models from Lindberg are the ultimate choice.

BESPOKE: Nothing beats having your own unique pair of glasses, custom built to meet your every whim, and the new Tom Davies bespoke service brings that within affordable reach of everyone. Longer legs? You got them. Narrower bridge? No problem. An extra couple of curves? Certainly Sir.

Claudia Schiffer to fit them? Sorry, you just get me!
